Tragedy struck on Saturday, February 8, 2025, when a fatal collision occurred in Orangeburg County, South Carolina. At approximately 5:30 p.m., a 2013 Honda Accord traveling east on U.S. 178 collided with a 1997 Ford Expedition heading west near the intersection with Kennerly Road. The driver of the Honda succumbed to injuries at the scene, while the sole occupant of the Ford remained unharmed. Authorities have yet to release the identity of the deceased, and the circumstances leading to the crash are under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
This incident contributes to a concerning trend of traffic fatalities in South Carolina. As of February 2, 2025, the state has recorded at least 52 road-related deaths. In 2024, the total reached 948 fatalities. Orangeburg County alone has seen at least three fatal crashes in 2025, following 46 such incidents in 2024.
